Question 1

How much space do cremated remains take up?

Accepted Answer

As a guide, cremated remains take about one cubic inch for every pound of healthy body weight. A person who weighed 180 lb needs an urn of about 180 cubic inches, which is our 4.0 size (230 cubic inches).

Question 2

What if they weighed more than 230 lb?

Accepted Answer

Our largest size, 4.0, holds 230 cubic inches. For a higher weight, the calculator pairs a 4.0 with a second, smaller urn or keepsake for the remaining ashes. You are also welcome to contact us and we will help you plan it.

Question 3

Should I use their weight before or after an illness?

Accepted Answer

Use their usual, healthy weight. The amount of ashes depends mostly on bone structure, which changes little with weight loss, so the earlier weight gives a safer size.

Question 4

Can I fit all the ashes if I also buy keepsakes?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Choose "Share with family" in the calculator and enter how many keepsakes you need. It takes their capacity away from the total and shows the size for the main urn.

Question 5

Are the sizes the same for every material?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Marble, onyx, rosewood, hand-painted pottery and Himalayan salt urns all come in the same six sizes and capacities. The stone color and veining of each urn vary naturally.
